Description
Composed between 1980 and 1984, these songs have never been performed. Aficionados of Yates’s poetry will find their rhyme and rhythm schemes fascinating to compare with his blank verse works. The flow of the lyrics and unusual combinations of recommended instruments will inspire each of us to imagine performances by singers and musicians of our own choice. British Pop artist, Sir Peter Blake, created the image of the Headless Ventriloquist for use on a faux L.P. cover considered by Yates and the graphic designer Iain Slater in the 1990’s but unrealised. Yates and Blake have collaborated on a number of projects, notably the internationally lauded BBC Arena film, MASTERS OF THE CANVAS, see BBC iPlayer.
sitar, muted coronet, finger chimes
She told him he was James Bond
she said she was Marilyn Monroe
she killed him with a sigh
her kiss was her death blow
o how they danced – how they romanced
sometimes hell sometimes heaven
codename honeybunny on the money
codename double O seven
she was Bonnie he was Clyde
she was playboy bunny of the month
he was Mr. Hyde
she was an angel heaven sent
he was a long distant cousin of Clarke Kent
her love was a bird – her love was a plane
every golden day – every velvet night
he was her Superman
but her love was kryptonite
she was Kitty of Scarlet Street
each painted toenail a masterpiece
he was the little tin soldier
she swept off his feet
she made up her mind to make up his mind
she thought of everything
warmed up his chair for him
see the lights flickering in Sing-Sing
their love was a bird – their love was a plane
every day and every night
he was her Superman
but her love was kryptonite
he was her Superman
o but her love was kryptonite
